Have you checked your EGO? I know that’s what I had to do about 6 months ago, and what I continue to do on a daily basis. No, I’m not talking about the psychological definition I’m talking about the difference between “Edging God Out” and “Exalt God Only”. Now, I wish I could take credit for this clever anagram but that honor goes to Mr. Ken Blanchard & Mr. Phil Hodges, the author’s of Lead Like Jesus. If you want to improve your leadership skills and put them more in line with the “greatest leadership role model of all time” then I highly recommend this book. Back to our story…
In July 2016 my wife, Laina, and I begin discussing the idea of a church plant or ministry in the city of Alexander City. We both new that it would be a lot of work, time, and financial obligation but we felt that it was time to give back to the wonderful town that had given us so much. However, instead of following the lead of Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us we allowed Satan to convince us that we couldn’t afford it. After all, just a few months before this we couldn’t make it to the end of the month with money in our checking account; suddenly we are supposed to afford to put on a meal and VBS-style event for 100 people? I was Edging God Out of the planning process and trying to do everything based on my abilities. It took 6 months for me to hear what God kept trying to tell me through friends, devotions and daily Bible reading…”let me dream for you.”
Once I realized that it didn’t matter how much money I had, but how much power God has, I stopped listening to all the reasons I could not start the outreach and started believing that God could start it. Of course, God’s wisdom will always be greater than man’s and looking back He definitely picked the right month, December 2016, to show that his power trumps all. Not only was it Christmastime, with all the additional expenses that the season entails, but it was our first Christmas with all three of our children. It was when I realized that I could only be successful by changing my EGO to Exalt God Only that we experienced a miracle in the Barnes household.
On December 10, 2016 a small group of Christians cooked and served hot dogs to over 75 residents in the Springhill Community. Laina and I purchased the food, printed off Bible verse coloring pages, bought 2 dozen boxes of crayons and about 20 basketballs, footballs, and soccer balls. We invited some friends who have hearts for outreach and missions as well as contacted the local branch of Take the City from Dadeville. Through the grace and power of God Curbside Service was born.
God has continued to bless us with more volunteers and more resources every month and we continue to spread the love of Jesus to everyone who will hear. Come join us the first Saturday of each month and share in the blessing!
